Greg calls for urgent improvements in local stroke services

Greg has called for urgent improvements in local stroke services after a new report highlighted poor standards at Tunbridge Wells Hospital.

The report "Assessment of stroke and cardiovascular quality indicators" shows that the hospital was given the lowest grade for five indicators. It also found that for Tunbridge Wells Hospital:

Only around 20% of patients are scanned within 1 hour of arrival – compared to nearly 80% at Kent & Canterbury Hospital.

Only 20% of stroke patients are admitted within 4 hours - compared to 70% at Kent & Canterbury Hospital and William Harvey Hospital.

Less than 70% of eligible stroke patients are given thrombolysis – in two hospitals in Kent this is 100%.

Greg said:

"These figures are of the utmost concern. The UK is already one of the poorer international performers on stroke and for Tunbridge Wells to be at the bottom of that list is unacceptable. I have asked West Kent Clinical Commissioning Group to take urgent action to improve the situation."
