Greg's tribute to the late John Spare OBE

It is a great shock to lose John Spare, one of Tunbridge Wells' most influential and respected citizens and, at the time, the youngest ever Mayor of our Borough.

John's vision and talent helped made Tunbridge Wells the thriving place it is today. As longstanding Leader of the Borough Council, John oversaw the creation of Royal Victoria Place, made Tunbridge Wells a by-word for financial soundness and encouraged the vibrant tapestry of voluntary organisations in the Borough, including creating what is now Voluntary Action Within Kent (VAWK).

Highly intelligent and shrewd, John made up his own mind rather than simply going with the herd. It made him a valuable source of wise counsel to his successors, Leaders of the Council, Members of Parliament and to the many people who came to him for advice.

John will be greatly missed not only for his warmth and stimulating company but as one of the people who made Tunbridge Wells a place that is loved by so many.

Our sympathy goes to his wife, Pam, and his son, Simon.
